1 / 6Kenya Railway Museum
About
The Kenya Railway Museum preserves the full story of East Africa's historic rail network, with real locomotives you can board. Rusting engines and vintage carriages fill an open-air yard under the Nairobi sun. Perfect for history lovers, families, and anyone curious about the region's colonial past.
The Kenya Railway Museum sits beside the old Nairobi railway station on Station Road. It holds one of East Africa's most complete collections of steam and diesel locomotives. Many engines date back to the early 1900s, when the Uganda Railway first crossed the continent. You can climb into cab seats and walk through original passenger carriages. The yard feels wonderfully unhurried, with staff happy to share stories behind each engine. A small indoor gallery displays maps, photographs, and railway artifacts from the colonial era. The famous carriage where Colonel Patterson hunted the Tsavo man-eaters sits here too. Budget a couple of hours to explore properly. Great for school trips, history enthusiasts, and travelers who want context beyond the safari circuit.
